Perpetuum mobile refers to the idea of perpetual motion — a continuous flow in which ideas emerge from earlier ones while simultaneously giving rise to new forms.
In Winiarski’s work, one can trace the evolution of recurring motifs, formal challenges, and their resolutions over the course of many years. Certain elements reappear, transformed, returning to generate entirely new works while remaining rooted in their original inquiry.
These prints are truly something special and are on display at our exhibition at Olsson Møbler, where you can also explore more than eighty original paintings, drawings, and limited-edition art prints — all presented alongside iconic Danish design classics.
Mezzotint is a printmaking process of the intaglio family, technically a drypoint method. It was the first tonal method to be used, enabling half-tones to be produced without using line- or dot-based techniques like hatching, cross-hatching or stipple. Mezzotint achieves tonality by roughening the plate with thousands of little dots made by a metal tool with small teeth, called a "rocker." In printing, the tiny pits in the plate hold the ink when the face of the plate is wiped clean. A high level of quality and richness in the print can be achieved. See the video on how it is done.
A master of contemporary mezzotint
Tomasz Winiarski is an acclaimed Polish printmaker and one of the distinctive contemporary practitioners of mezzotint, a demanding intaglio technique renowned for its exceptional tonal depth, velvety blacks and subtle transitions of light.
Born in 1982 in Bielsko-Biała, Winiarski studied at the Faculty of Graphic Arts at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, where he completed his diploma in the Intaglio Studio. Since 2006, he has worked within the same studio under Prof. Henryk Ożóg, one of Poland’s foremost figures in contemporary printmaking, and has developed his own practice alongside an academic career at the Academy.
Winiarski’s work is distinguished by an extraordinary command of traditional metal-printing techniques, particularly mezzotint and drypoint. His prints demonstrate an exceptional sensitivity to light, texture and repetition, transforming the physical process of engraving into intricate and atmospheric compositions. His long-running Perpetuum Mobile series explores recurring forms and visual structures across numerous works.
His work has been exhibited internationally across Europe, Asia, North America and beyond, and he has received numerous distinctions, including Main Prizes at the Atlante International Awards in Spain.
At Beauton Art Gallery, we present Winiarski’s graphic works as examples of a highly specialised printmaking tradition — where technical mastery, patience and artistic vision meet.
